One of the great things about deciding to build our own home is that there are literally thousands of home plans available on the Internet. The plans we are using came from Architecturaldesigns.com. The plans we chose are not exactly what we wanted but they allow you to make changes to the plans and we have made the changes needed to make the home exactly what we want.
The house we’re building is not large, less than 1,500 square feet. The architecture make the home look larger than it really is. We did not want a large home but we wanted to ensure the home has the amenities and layout that we were looking for. It will have a full walk-out basement and we plan to leave the basement unfinished, for now, but should we have any desire to have a larger home, we could finish the basement at a later date adding another 1470 square feet of living space. There is also an option in our plan to install a 700 square foot loft room over the garage and that’s something we plan to do so Renee has an area where she can do her amazing crafts.
The home is going to be situated on the site to take advantage of passive solar. We’re also going to have radiant-heat flooring in the bathrooms and install photo-voltaic solar panels on the roof to supplement our electrical consumption. With the use of these features and other features such as spray-in foam insulation and heat sinks, we plan to make the home as close to a net-zero energy consumption home as possible. If you have any suggestions or ideas for features that can help us achieve out net-zero energy goal I’d love to hear them! Please feel free to comment below!
